I am starting this blog today, on my birthday. For my birthday I decided to bake my own cake. Of course I go to Dorie Greenspan’s Baking from My Home to Yours for a recipe. For today, it is the Perfect Party Cake. I think this makes recipe #25 that I have made from this book.
The cake recipe was for an intermediate level baker. The buttercream in particular took a little bit of patience. Mine did not turn out as snowy, pristine white as Dorie described, probably because I used a dark vanilla extract. I need to find the clear type for the future. And then spreading the buttercream ON TOP of the jam layers was futile. The slickness of the jam made the buttercream mix in with it, creating one topping instead of two separate ones. Oh well.
Anyway, the cake was delicious. It tasted like a Tastykake Jelly Krimpet (a local baked goods brand). My twins and my two young nephews loved the cake. I think I will use this same recipe to make a sheet cake for one of the twin’s birthday parties.
Happy Birthday to me!
